Dr E. Demoncheaux

This is a very important term in the science classroom and it is hurrying by!

Pre DP Biology and Chemistry students are a close-knit bunch. In chemistry, they are naturally learning about the different models of the atom and how the Periodic Table is put together. They tried not to gain weight while calculating the molecular mass of several compounds, including candies.

They averaged the isotopes of different atoms. In Biology, their synapses are firing more rapidly than usual while learning about enzymes as natural catalysts. They carried out various online labs looking at the action of enzymes.  They all enjoyed their last classroom straw and potato challenge before going home for a well-deserved half-term break.

IBDP Junior Biologists (D1) have performed online simulations of osmosis after spending time observing and identifying cell ultrastructures. They are becoming experts at looking at cells in both light and electron microscopes.

As educators, we must make sure our students dare to take more challenges, to make mistakes, and get things wrong to make progress. They must learn to fall over, because they are trying new things, and then get up again. Our IBDP Senior Biologists have been working very hard on their internal assessment being intellectually adventurous.

The process can be hard and strenuous but they are all growing into knowledgeable, reflective, and critical thinkers while developing strong independent study skills. I am thrilled to be able to guide them and particularly struck by their resilience in face of massive adversity caused by COVID-19.

Looking at the smiles on all of our students’ faces, it is obvious they are enjoying being back in school at Ecole des Roches.
